Celebrating Golf's Timeless Traditions and Embracing New Ones

As we continue to innovate and inspire with our golf apparel at A. PUTNAM, I wanted to take a moment to celebrate not only the rich traditions that make golf so special but also the exciting opportunities that inspire the next generation of golfers. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, these customs and events add depth, camaraderie, and joy to the game we all love.

Honoring Golf's Heritage

The Green Jacket: One of the most iconic symbols in golf, the green jacket is awarded to winners of the Masters Tournament. This tradition, which began in 1949, continues to inspire golfers worldwide.

Champions Dinner: Each year, the reigning Masters champion hosts a dinner for past winners, selecting the menu and sharing stories of their victories. It's a testament to the camaraderie and respect among golf's elite.

Skipping the Ball: During practice rounds at the Masters, players often attempt to skip balls across the water on the 16th hole. This lighthearted tradition adds a playful touch to one of golf's most prestigious events.

Today was a special day at Augusta National, cheering on our Texas qualifiers at the Drive, Chip & Putt. Fields Ranch at PGA Frisco served as one of the regional qualifying sites for the DCP, as the last stop before Augusta 🌺 An amazing start to Masters Week!

Inspiring Future Generations: Drive, Chip and Putt

One of the most exciting modern traditions in golf is the Drive, Chip and Putt competition. This nationwide junior golf development initiative gives young players ages 7-15 a chance to showcase their skills on one of golf's biggest stages—Augusta National Golf Club. Participants compete in three core skills: driving for distance, chipping for accuracy, and putting with precision. The competition culminates in the National Finals held annually on the Sunday before the Masters Tournament.

This year’s event saw eight champions crowned across four age divisions for both boys and girls. The finalists not only demonstrated exceptional talent but also embodied the spirit of sportsmanship and determination that defines golf. Events like this ensure that golf’s legacy continues to grow by inspiring young players to dream big and pursue excellence.

Iconic Golf Customs

The 19th Hole: Known as the clubhouse bar, this is where golfers gather post-round to share stories and enjoy camaraderie over drinks.

Hickory Golf: For history enthusiasts, some clubs offer rounds played with traditional hickory clubs—a nostalgic nod to golf’s early days.

Breakfast Ball: A U.S. tradition allowing players to retake their first tee shot without penalty—a lighthearted way to start a round.

Course Etiquette and Traditions

Repairing Divots and Ball Marks: A timeless act of respect for both the course and fellow players.

Proper Dress Code: While dress codes are evolving, many clubs still value elegance on the course—a principle reflected in our A. PUTNAM designs.

Post-Round Handshake: Removing hats and shaking hands at a round’s end symbolizes respect and sportsmanship—a simple yet profound gesture.

At A. PUTNAM, we’re inspired by these traditions and events like Drive, Chip and Putt that make golf more than just a sport—it’s a community. Whether you’re hitting the links or cheering on young talent at Augusta National, remember that every swing and every moment contributes to a legacy we’re proud to support.
