Shifting Perspective

Shifting Perspective

Tiffany Roth illustrates how practicing perspective shifts can foster creativity, fresh insights, and renewed energy.

Golf grants us the gift of perspective—sometimes enlightening, sometimes teaching us valuable lessons. This unique aspect of the game is one of the many reasons it attracts a diverse audience, regardless of age and gender.

In our professional lives, just like on the course, we can become entrenched in our routines and comfort zones. The familiarity of our habits can dull our awareness and stifle our growth. So, how can we continue to improve? How do we keep our minds open to new ideas? When routine becomes second nature, how do we maintain a sense of adventure?

The answer lies in perspective.

While it may not be the only solution, in my experience, perspective has the power to transform the way we see our surroundings and ourselves. The golf course, or even the driving range, is an ideal playground for this exploration. It offers a “safe” environment to try new things, where the outcomes become a reflection of our personal philosophies—philosophies that vary significantly among golfers. This is often why you’ll hear players say they've “fixed” their swing a million times over the years.

Here are a few ways you can practice shifting your perspective on the golf course:

  • Play from Different Tee Markers: Challenge yourself by playing from tees you don’t typically use, regardless of your strength or experience. This shift will allow you to try out new shots and make use of different clubs in your bag.
  • Limit Yourself to Three Clubs for One Round: For instance, take only a 4-iron, an 8-iron, and a putter. This constraint forces you to think creatively about your shot selection and enhances your adaptability. You’ll also learn how to hit shots with unusual club choices.
  • Use Different Clubs for Familiar Shots: If you typically use a high-lofted club for chipping, experiment with a lower lofted club. Alternatively, when faced with tight grass, try using your putter instead. This practice not only develops versatility but also helps break the monotony of routine.
  • Transform Every Hole into a Par 3: Play from 100 yards in and aim to score under par. This shift in perspective can reignite your competitive spirit and encourage you to focus on precision.
  • Target Specific Areas: Rather than aiming for the center of the fairway or green, select a unique target for each shot. Being specific in your aims can sharpen your focus and enhance your shot-making skills.
  • Play with Different Balls: Venture outside your comfort zone by using a ball from a different brand. Even the slightest change in logo can shift your mindset and influence how you approach each shot, making the game feel fresh and exciting.
  • Embrace Challenging Conditions: Purposefully play in less-than-ideal weather conditions, such as wind or rain. This not only builds mental toughness but also helps you learn to adapt under pressure.
  • Explore Different Courses: Experience various geographies and terrains. Each course presents unique challenges that can expand your golf skills and perspective.
  • Play with New People: One of the best aspects of golf is the opportunity to meet a wide variety of people. Each round can lead to unexpected friendships and insights, further enriching your experience both on and off the course.

By practicing shifting your perspective in familiar settings, you can cultivate a mindset that welcomes change and fosters creativity, both in your game and your career. The lessons learned on the golf course can seamlessly translate into professional and personal lives, encouraging innovation, resilience, and open-mindedness.

Just as routine has the ability to ground us through complexity, let us not forget the importance of perspective. As we shift our views on the course to improve our game, we can also apply that same philosophy in our careers. Embrace the adventure of unknown or new, challenge your limits, and let the game of golf guide you toward an expansive way of thinking.
